Help I’m Broken! Where’s My Band Aid?

I’m in creative surgery with myself right now…let me explain;
It’s been a tough week with one thing and another, you know how it is….you are on a high getting things done, enjoying company, organizing stuff, moving furniture, and mountains….y’know, the normal spring day when you feel like you could eat the hind leg off a donkey because it’s spring and you can’t get enough of anything….yeah, that kind of day. Well….
And then you come tumbling down of your mountain high…after you’ve just moved the damn thing, and your all torn up at the bottom, ripped to shreds by the fall and exhausted by the climb.
Also, there’s a boulder on your head the size of Colorado and you have only one finger left and you are pointing it at your nearest loved one because obviously they are the source of all your agony. Right?
You know the kind of day I mean?
It takes a while to manifest this kind of day. Weeks of preparation and a slow erosion of the carefully crafted diet, the creeping sleep deprivation and the feeding of the over-excitement devil with sugar laden commercial chocolate and stupid food like bread….yum.
No! BAD! very bad….oh and the beating…you gotta get a good beating or two….
Sigh.
Back to the painting then. And the walking. And the Primal diet and the early nights, and the expressing your feelings as they come up instead of putting them all into a bottle and chucking them overboard.
I’ll start with the early night I think.
We all got to start somewhere!

Beat Urinary Tract Infections For Good!

Well, after another round of the same old same old I took a crash course in treating this b**** of a condition. Within a few days I found I could turn things around quite considerably. It wasn’t easy going as it demands discipline but the relief I found made the hard work so worth it.

The Failure of the Concrete is the Plant’s Success: The Benefits of Not Succeeding…

As a follow up to my post of the other day (here) I am quite keen to share my latest thoughts on failure and how useful it can be on the path to success. I would go so far as to say that failure is an essential part of success! In other words I don’t think we can succeed, fully and deeply until we have had our fair share of fails.

Why do I say this? Well apart from the fact that all the experts in the field agree with me ūüėČ I am also reaching my own conclusions quite independently based on my own experience, which has, funnily enough included bags of failure if I’m honest about it! I flunked art school, quit jobs, got the sack from other jobs, failed to complete numerous courses, went a few times to classes and never went back…you name it I’ve ‘failed’ at it. I even sucked at door to door sales…but to be honest it was the most horrendous experience of my life so it was good to fail at that! I’ve not even mentioned the numerous relationships that have gone by the by! Now that was much more painful but I still learnt a lot about myself.

Anyway. My point being, that as a result of trying all these things and somehow finding I lacked the requisite know-how/discipline/organization or personality traits (patience, kindness, understanding, humility et al) I am still here! I didn’t die of shame, (even though I felt it for a while) and that’s the main thing! Sometimes we cling so dearly to a thing we believe we must succeed at, (despite it not feeling good in the slightest) that we entirely miss the point of it all.

Now I’m not suggesting for a minute that we don’t apply ourselves to things or ‘work’ at them but there are things in life that just ain’t our thing. If it is our thing but we don’t yet know it, and we just need more expertise or experience, then dropping it for a while, if needs be, will only serve to show us that it is our thing after all.

If something is a good fit, it will always come back to us in one form or another. Even people we love can remain our friends despite not working on an intimate level if we are open to that…

The beautiful thing about failure is that when we get good at it, it is like an art form in its own right. It becomes a process of letting go, like falling off a log. When we need to let go, it is right to let go, but we don’t because we cling to this fear of ‘the fail’ and unwittingly we arrest our own development.

Our process depends on failure!!!

What I’m suggesting is that we allow our natural tendency to fail at things to guide us towards what we will excel at! I’m sure you know the Thomas Edison story as he tried to invent the light bulb? Well that’s all well and good but do we know how to fail with grace and good feeling…and then carry on? Notice how, unlike Edison I am not denying the ‘failure’ thing. For me it has been more useful to accept it for what it is and move on. But interestingly enough both attitudes can benefit us; I’m just giving an alternative version! Whatever you want to call it…it’s important to carry on! Just try approaching something in a new way or take a new attitude, if it’s your thing that is! I guess the light bulb really was his thing!

The Paradox Strikes…

I didn’t get it for ages. The paradoxical revelation came for me when I started acknowledging that I had failed and that I was all right with that. As I came to terms with my lack of ‘follow through’ it ceased to matter so much and as the skies of self-recrimination cleared, I could finally see that alongside the fails were a whole bunch if successes!

Self-awareness, self-knowing and understanding are some of my best assets now. I know what turns me on and what leaves me cold and I choose to flow with the river of bliss and not the trudge of duty…

By learning about myself I can now control my destiny…more so than ever. If I had doggedly stuck with the first ‘job’ that had come along I’d still be washing dishes in a potato bar….I’m glad I got the sack! I’m glad I quit! I’m glad I didn’t go back.

Now I am following a path of my choosing and learning something exciting everyday! Now that’s what I call success!

Seamless: A Revealing Journey…A Poem

I just awoke from a dream….not seconds.ago…and this was the journey that I saw…

Like travellers we strode
Cross valley
And mountain ridge
Like gritty royal characters
The peasants we did pass
We looked up from our toil
To see the royal throng
We stopped with wonder
As we saw ourselves go by

We were transvestites on the beach
Hollering with love and confusion
Dressed in our cross referenced illusion
We looked up to see the punks
Running towards us through the sand
We were charging skins red raw from battle
Worn with tattooed sides and red blood
Running in veins so wild
As we flew towards our quarry
Till we saw the whites of their eyes
And stopped….amazed at seeing
Ourselves

We were landed gentry
Enjoying feasting off the fat of the land
I took her hand
Silken gown flowing down
Not far removed from the royalty
Of yesteryear
You were my servant when I spied you near
I looked up to see my lord’s eyes
Over serving caviare and scones did I then

Pain relief from the freezer chest

If like me you have had pain as your near constant companion throughout the years you will have tried many things. Today I’m going to talk about ice therapy for reducing inflammation and KILLING PAIN! YES!

Pain is generally due to inflammation which is the body’s protective mechanism for expelling foreign matter and intruders (including bits of yourself which is what Auto-Immunity is all about!). I’ve had chronic intestinal pain for about 20 years now and trust me I’ve tried everything to eliminate it. I am now getting to the crux of the matter which is partly due to understanding what the damage actually is, and how to correct it using various dietary approaches. My main concern right now is helping you to achieve quick, safe and effective pain relief because unchecked, pain can lead to depression. I’ve experienced a lot of that over the years partly because I’ve felt so incredibly helpless in the face of this unresolved situation.

IN PAIN?…ICE IS PROBABLY YOUR BEST FRIEND!

First up you will need some kind of ice pack. I use the ice bags which come in our meat box delivery. They stay in the freezer and recently I decided to try one out as when I’m having a flare up I’ve always sought the cold. I can’t tell you what a difference it has made.

OK so this is going to hurt a bit as the ice burns your skin. The good news is that ice shrinks fat cells so you will help to stop the slack bits in their tracks! That’s positive side effect number one! See Jack Kruse for more on Cold Thermogenesis here.

You will become accustomed to the cold after a while when the nerves have stopped going crazy. Adjust gradually to opening up the whole pack and when you are comfortable wrap a towel round you and chill. Literally!

What we are doing is arresting the effects of the inflammation by shutting down capillary circulation to the peripheral area.

After about ten or twenty minutes you should be feeling some relief if not a total remission of symptoms. However, the more belly fat you have, the longer you will probably need to use the ice.

YOU MUST STOP WHEN THE SKIN IS PINK AND BEFORE IT TURNS WHITE!!

And there you have it. Simple and effective and more importantly non-harmful to your body or your purse!

Be sure to pass this on to any one you know who is dealing with pain.

Handling the new moon with grace

The new moon. The dark moon. What, if anything does this signify to you?

To me it engenders the Yin energies of our cycle and is, in essence, a time of emptying and letting go. Being more responsive and yielding are the character signatures of the Yin side of our nature. After studying my own behaviour at this time I believe I have found the key energies representative of this period.

The skill is in learning to express the positive aspects of things as there is always a choice. For that we must acknowledge our own feelings toward moon phases and anything else for that matter! This is an invitation for you to dig in and excavate your own truths. It’s aim is to stimulate self inquiry.

These are my personal findings offered in the spirit of sharing that you may uncover your unique approach…

This is a collection of intuitive guidelines designed to be used around the week of the new moon, both before and after. It will soon expand as you add your own understandings. I am very interested to hear how they work for you and what happens when you try my suggestions.

The Dark Moon Protocol
(five day period)

It would be better to go with the flow at these times and not resist the desire to try new and refreshing things but only if they are part of the natural course of the flow. Now is not the time to force anything. Gently coax things and be prepared to let things start and stop sporadically if they need to.

Now can be a great time to make dynamic changes but not by inputting more information. By sitting in contemplation we can bring forth the seeds of what has already been sown. Now is the time for gestation of new ideas. We must plant and water those seeds and warm them with our kind attention.

Now is the time for releasing output. Favor writing over reading. Sitting and writing out thoughts and lists of things that are running around our head is a good way to clear the decks for the new growth coming. It is best to follow the urge to purge at this time. It is a time of preparation. You don’t need to do the list, just make it. Don’t leave any area unaccounted for.

Releasing things on any level is a great dark moon practice. Taking old things to the charity shop, allowing emotional issues to drop and forgiving our friends are three examples. Let go of the need to fill up the mind but instead turn to the body and make sure it is getting all the nutritional support needed. Also make time for nourishment of the spirit. Now is not the time to skimp on activities that nurture and support your growth.

Engaging in gentle physical activity and being peaceful is favourable to study and work related projects. Anything that brings peace and tranquillity is reflecting the nature of the moon at this time. Stay well hydrated and eat for health and comfort. Now is not the time for fasting or regimes that favour austerity.

Music at this time should be relaxed and positive. Think Cafe Del Mar or Buddha Bar. Resist the urge to thrash around or overstimulate your energies with Rock or Metal; leave that for the Full moon!!

The Buddhist meditation on Emptiness would be a very good practice at this time as the essence of emptiness is strongly apparent.

New Thoughts: Letting go and changing track

The art of acceptance is getting more, well…acceptable in my camp.¬† This is sterling news I can tell you.¬†Let me demonstrate how this transformation is manifesting right now; I’m sure you must have had this happen before too.

OK. I¬†spent a bit of precious time today writing out a long comment on a blog¬†and before I posted it in the final¬†adjustments it¬†just disappeared; ¬†I mistakenly clicked a random link somewhere, and lo and behold the work is gone. After all that work I was, well, a little annoyed but the beautiful thing was that I came straight on here and started writing. I’ve decided to use that energy of frustration positively and do something right away. I might even create a page right now, listing all the things I was going to put on the comment.¬†How about that? Why is that amazing?
Well the thing is that I know how I would have reacted a year ago; bellowing and hitting my palms on the desk or some other such over-reaction. It certainly wouldn’t have been that calm!

I am now starting to¬†believe that¬†the changes I’ve made recently, most especially in my diet,¬†are transforming my reactions as well as just my body composition!
This is¬†surprising considering I’ve only been ‘Primal’ for a couple of months now. No, I take it back; this is truly amazing! The scientist in me is doing cartwheels for I can now see solid results with my own eyes on levels beyond the physical. It seems¬†that there is more to the Carbohydrate addiction than meets the eye.
For instance, our little boy is so much calmer without the processed apple syrup covered rice cakes and other ‘treats’ that we used to rely on to ‘calm him down’ or appease him. Now I can see we were unwittingly keeping him on a grain and fructose¬†induced sugar high that was¬†sending his little head¬†spinning and therefore making his behaviour reasonably uncontrollable. We only noticed it when it (his brain)¬†was running out of fuel!! This is a child who has been brought up on practically no sugar (we thought!). God only knows what other kids are like on fizzy drinks and the like! I mean this was a humble rice cake or ten!

Sometime things are not meant to happen in the way we think they should, and that’s the inevitable¬†part of life that the ‘angry’ perfectionist will just not accept.

Now I can see that the fuel I was choosing was not only ‘feeding’ this destructive tendency, but actively joining the dots to make it an explosive outlet for pent up and excessive ‘backlog’ of energy that was not being used constructively.

Now I no longer feel driven or ambitious, but I do feel inspired and productive!

Now I no longer feel I’m fighting my way through treacle town, but I do now feel muscles working in my legs and a fleetness of foot previously unknown.

Now I no longer feel myself fatigued by social encounters, but I do feel energized and excited in a nice way.

Can all this happen because of a change of diet? Well yes. They say you are what you eat. If you eat quick burning fuel (sugar, starch) then you’re going to be what ever you already are, but quicker.¬† It turns out I was always quick, despite what my art teacher thought!! Bitch!

Ahem. Excuse me…

My point is that I still get angry like normal people do, however, there is a shift in quality.¬†It is now somehow grounded, almost ironic if you know what I mean, and also strangely humorous! In other words, when I catch myself ‘being angry’ I can see my inner Buddha nodding and chuckling. This is such a transformation.

My rage of before used to be searing, dangerous and downright depressing in it’s desire to destroy and inflict pain. I have never felt so relieved to see a part of me transform than this.

So no, sometimes when things go ‘wrong’¬† we must remember that things are destined to go wrong (for this is Samsara remember!) but let it not be us that is the thing going wrong eh?¬†That isn’t the way it’s supposed to be at all! We are supposed to stand in the field of life with our hair dangling in the wind as we walk between the tracks of wheat we will never eat, simply enjoying the walk and the feel of nature about us.

The art is in letting it go and changing your track…then keep on walking!

Bacon, Eggs and Yin Yoga….going native in a wierd world

Well hello again dear reader. There’s been a few changes around here. You know I’m not one for prolific posts (I have a life to lead away from the screen!) but I thought you should know what’s been going down around my particle of universe…check it out….

I am wearing my shades at night and not in the sun. I have switched from becoming almost vegan to eating meat every day and Yin yoga is stretching the parts of me that no other medication could ever reach. Oh and my biceps are bigger than they’ve ever been in my life.
What the hell is going on?

Well, in a nut shell I’ve gone native. I’m living as a hunter gatherer in the 21st Century, er, you know…hunting in Waitrose and going barefoot in the garden lots….well, it’s a start. I tell you what though; my energy has gone through the roof and for a while there I thought I was never going to shift the ME/CFS label thing out of my system but guess what folks, it seems the yolks have it and bacon has never tasted so virtuous.

It’s ok¬†if you’ve never experienced meat¬†power in your muscles, but being brought up on meat and then going veggie years later, I never did recover that sense of sheer joy at feeling the full range of oomph in my muscles that they were surely designed for. Now you have to buy ethically of course as it’s grass-fed meat and organic produce we’re after here because like every veggie we care about the animals but I’m sorry, if you eat cheese and milk you are inevitably part of the industrial food chain and the best you can do is to give yourself the proper nourishment so you can really go out there and make some changes.

I tell you, this is all a major turn around for me. not more than a few months back I was proudly announcing how close to a vegan ideal I was getting in my meals; farting and sporting a gassed up bloated bean belly, at least I felt ethically superior. It did nothing for my energy however, and day after day of lagging on the sofa waiting for that magic few hours of pick up was starting to take its toll. I started on the St Johns wort as I just couldn’t find my inner sunshine anymore.

Fast forward a few weeks and a month in to my new diet of meat, fish, fowl, eggs, nuts, salad leaves, vegetables and lots of cold water (with¬†cacao and other treats interspersed)¬†I am just about to launch my yoga business and start my first group classes. I’m¬†already expanding my range of activities to hauling rocks, gardening with a spade, carrying my nearly three year-old into town on my back (with shopping sometimes)…well it doesn’t take a genius to figure what my body has been lacking.

The other day when eating freshly fried bacon in butter (yeah!) I was thinking how every food is trying to emulate this basically supremely satisfying blend of protein and fat and salt. Oh boy. But you do need to realize on thing. This is a food choice pathway that leaves bread by the wayside. The complex carb boat is sunk. No more rice, spelt, wheat, rye, anything containing gluten and also no beans. Mung bean no more. Chick pea forget. No. This diet is only for those with the mind of determination and the will to survive.
After two years stuck on the sofa, I can’t look back now. I’d rather have muscle power than bean farts any day, anyway.

As for the shades…well that’s a whole ‘nother story….ha!

Go Go PALEO!

Wouldn’t it be nice if one day there were no locks on your doors?

Well, I’m not talking about your real doors of course, though this would suggest that we’ve finally reached the utopian ideal of a peaceful golden age where no one needs to lock anything and that would indeed be lovely. No. I’m talking about your creative castle doors which are far more accessible than utopia and easier to unlock than you may imagine.

In the last blog Strategies for Unlocking the Creative Castle I talked about lock one which is the #trimmings and peripherals lock which needs some fun experimentation and a moderate amount of information gathering.

I hope you got some insights into what turns your lights on and spins your taps to full-bore? If not go and read it again and have a happy week experimenting.

If you fancy doing things in no particular order I fully endorse that too. Here we go.

Lock #Two: MINDSET

I am an artist who likes to do things in completely crazy and unconventional ways
I am an artist who can work in many different mediums at any time I choose
I am a writer, I’m not being an artist with paint today but with words
I am a tired artist who has done enough writing for now and will go to bed
I am an artist sleeping in an artistic way dreaming up inspiration for tomorrow

Ok. there are a few mindsets for you. Pick one and ride with it for an hour, a day, a minute. Whatever works NOW and takes you to the next NOW.

DO NOT dawdle in grey indecision. Know that you are there and beat a hasty retreat. Where? Somewhere…clean the bath for all I care just get out of the greyness. It is not a good place for you to be. Your locks will rust with boredom and no key will be able to reach you.

Find a mindset. Experiment. Say how great you are…go on!pretend! If it works it works. Now experiment some more and find some paper and a pen…there you go….see? Easy does it….

BABY STEPS towards the door. Turn the key carefully and don’t choke on the dust when you open the tomb. You in? Good.

This room is going to get a makeover!

See what we did there? Yay!

It’s called a visualization. Sorry for the patronizing tone there but my mind is loving it and so should yours; it’s a playful child-like thing if you are creatively invested in it so it really doesn’t mind the odd patronization. Only adults fear being talked down to so you have to try to circumvent the grown up and tell it to be something important like an ‘observer’ and observe the rules of St. Fu….in other words Shut The F*** Up. No offence intended, honest guv.

Good. Now the child can play.

Enter Stage Left: Quiet peace and wonder. They all play with wooden bricks and smile as the sun streams through the window. {Laughter}

That’s the feeling. The magic when you are in your castle. From whence does it cometh?

Mind set. Mind set. Mind set.

It’s a play. It’s scenery. It’s music, mood and lighting. It’s lines delivered and audience wooed. It’s theatre. That’s the mind. That’s the scene, NOW you are the dancing queen….

Argghh! how did Abba get in?…they get in everywhere! Exactly. Do you remember the dreaminess on their faces? The Glow and The Shine? The trousers…er…they had the MIND SET!

Go play…
Go dream…
Go look at who your imagination says you can be…

That’s key #2 in a nutshell.
Right there.
