Got A Bad Mood?

I have to credit Carl Gustav Jung with the original quote which was as follows.

“Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes”

I read it in a book and it stuck but I’ve paraphrased it because it is so spot on. How many times in daily life do we reach for the outside option to make ourselves feel better?

How to Sleep Better; Yes! Much Better!

I became interested in my sleep patterns and how to correct them during my recovery from ME/CFS.

I figured that better sleep was key to my recovery.

Being an insomniac, sometimes painting into the night and waking up at stupid times of the morning I had programmed myself for failure.

The essay below is the theory behind the practices which are provided at the end in PDF form for you to print and takeaway.

Today I enjoy a wonderful sleep and have a real evening, with time for myself and my partner to catch up, and whatever!

I no longer work into the wee small hours and therefore my life feels more structured and light, as opposed to chaotic and dark!

Today’s ToDo’s: Bullet Proof Formula for Zen-ness

The back-story to this post is that I was journalling ways to deal with my frequent bouts of ‘frantic’ energy. You know what I mean…getting on your horse and riding off in all directions. Here’s what I journalled for myself. Perhaps it will resonate with you too….deep breath!

Question: How do I maintain momentum in a sustainable way?

  1. Pace the activity:- go slower and leave more space in-between individual actions. Breathe more whilst you do this.

  2. Allow gaps in time to extend:- like doing mini-meditations, suspend the mind and merely focus on the breath. Sit still and  allow a stare to happen into space or onto a point or object. How far out can you get? Play with your stare. What’s behind it?

  3. Channel the tension:- don’t try to change it or escape it. Observe and imagine where it might go instead. Sit with it and feel it’s texture or find it’s colour.

  4. Imagine and decide:- make decisions on where you want that tension to go. Ask yourself what part of our life would benefit from more tension? NB: Remember without ‘optimal’ tension, a bridge would be useless. Imagine where that bridge might be for you?

  5. Find your treasure:- finding something shiny and sparkly in the dirt should excite you. If we can find those things, and recognise when we are finding them let us not overlook the experience. Hold onto the sparkle with conscious intent for a few moments and take on board it’s vibration. Absorb it’s frequency and get a little higher.

I can’t promise any regularity but there will be more videos along the way as I can find little windows; as you may know, I’m a busy mum recovering from ME/CFS…so hang with me a minute and see how I am healing my world.

It may be Hellish, but at least I’m here!

Recovery isn’t all about getting better. It’s also about adjusting, changing, accepting and releasing. We can need multiple processes to happen before we start to feel better in the way we desire to.

Just to give you an idea how this applies in the real world here is an insight into my current little drama.

Somehow, due to numerous factors I’ve manage to put my back out good and proper. I’ve been to the chiropractor and there is a loosening in process. I think in terms of blocked energy because after years of practical healing and recovery from multiple things, I now know it counts, and is real. Think life force/prana/chi or whatever vibes with you.

OK. So I identified my little psychological process that has been activated into my awareness. Here it is and goes something like this.

  • long term illness means you are cut off from previous modes of functioning.
  • we adjust our world accordingly and create our own alternatives.
  • life becomes a reflection of our ‘own little world’.
  • we recover! yay!
  • we come up against the need to ‘re-enter’ the rest of the world or the ‘real’ version of it.
  • we resist because we quite like it here.
  • we know this world and have lost the ability to be anything else so why not just stay?
  • we create something else to distract us from the growth process.
  • more pain!
  • yay! pain works a treat…it’s a different part of the body which is quite a change, I think I can continue to be dysfunctional after all!
  • Wait a minute! did I just say that?
  • Goddam it…I’m going to beat this things too!
  • And so we strive….

Onward we go and heal the next malady. But did we stop to consider why we create all this hassle? Here’s one perspective, for when you are into having a philosophical musing…

I believe illness teaches us more about compassion, resilience, tenacity, honesty, strength, weakness, reaching out, friends, loved ones, family, challenges, love, life and humanity than being a super-I-never-get-sick kind of guy ever will.

My dad was one of those and within a year he was dead with Cancer.

I’m ok with my bad back thanks…at least I’m alive.

Transitions Into Joy

How could I have lived this morning differently?

I could have given Ewan my undivided attention this morning instead of rushing into doing the washing up. I could have sat and centred myself before running headlong into working on anything other than my state of being. I could have left the brown envelope unopened until I had done my morning ritual. I could have let Dru have his morning smoke before I told him the bad news. I could have seen things differently instead of crumpling into helplessness and despair. I could have been patient with myself for feeling upset about it all.

I feel I need to get a morning routine that is more helpful to me. I want to enter the day in a conscious state of peace and joy not barreling around trying to catch up and missing so much.
I don’t want Ewan to feel left out and like he has to protest by weeing on the carpet. I don’t want to be angry with him any more.

Why despite a great night with friends do I feel so negative? It’s almost a default setting and I guess I need to spend plenty of time resetting my habitual mind.

I have a ‘poor me’ nature that is entirely outmoded in this new way of being. I need to get back my natural bliss. It has been hidden for so many years, so I need patience with myself.

Seeing as how I find difficulties where there need be none, it behoves me to pre-plan for these inevitable downers. What do I do when I feel confused, disappointed, dissatisfied or dissociated? What strategies can I put in place to help myself out of the darkness?

Time and again I must remind myself that I AM strong, I AM resilient, I AM tough.

I need to break through this layer of false weakness and find the real substance I know is there. I can bring my vibration to a high place if I practice and practice like I mean it. Remembering to do this must also become second nature.

Raise it up!
Don’t drop it!
We are riding waves
Of vibration
Simply put
It’s the only real issue
That matters!

Here are your Sanity Claus top tips for Silly Season

Are you planning on staying sane this Christmas? Me too.

Here’s how I intend to do it….

ONE: I will give myself permission to do any and all the following…

  1. Fail: failure IS an option and it’s not a sack-able offence. In fact it can lead to greater creativity if we are light about it. If we have any anger towards it that’s ok. Be with that anger too. Just channel it into something creative.
  2. Succeed: I can succeed at anything I want if I notice when I am doing it well….does that make sense? Success comes in all shapes and forms. Staying calm is success, especially at the moment! Just make a mental note of when you are doing it right.
  3. Try: Trying has such a bad rap but it might work out useful in the right situation. Try to stay calm instead of flying off the handle…just….try….! If you fail, well go back to step one.
  4. Experiment: Definitely worth doing, but you’ve got to watch for results and be on the ball….don’t lose your head over this one! Say to yourself, “What would happen if….”
  5. Practice: Practice the things you know you want to do but you don’t know how to do them well enough for your satisfaction. Practice it and things might just happen. Practice everything…including staying calm!

TWO: I will be devastatingly honest with myself…

Don’t leave anything unexamined, even if it’s completely cringe-worthy. Try to let it all BE without needing to act-out, (unless the acting out feels good that is; that’s therapy!) There’s a fine line between cathartic therapeutic process and destructive compulsive childish behaviour; but it’s a mile wide in practice. Imagine you’re an actor. It’s about masks. Just be conscious and KEEP CHECKING INTO SELF AWARENESS (which only lives in the NOW by the way) and in time you can let the mask drop, revealing your amazing authentic self!

Why Practice Yoga?

Beyond the obvious physical fitness benefits, what are we actually doing when we practice yoga? What is yoga for and why is it good for us? Here are a few pointers as to what it’s all about. Let these thoughts be a launch pad for your own practice. Your own experience will of course be unique and this is why it is best to try it for yourself!

Establishing a safe inner space

Sometimes we need to retreat from the world for a bit. It’s OK to use external entertainment for a while, but if we really want to create deep and lasting change, an internally oriented practice is the most effective. Yoga can help to center us while we traverse our internal landscape. Once we know what to expect from our inner world we can mold it to our own needs. A side effect of the process is that we will never need to look elsewhere for the comfort and solace we sometimes crave.

* Connecting with our greater sense of self: once we awaken the thirst for a more expansive way of thinking, yoga can take us into a deeper more profound relationship with ourselves. The destination we are seeking is the vast experience of nature. We can eventually transcend our sense of ‘limited’ personal self as we connect with blissful awe to the cosmic reality upon which our lives are truly built.

* Creating strong neural pathways for an enhanced relaxation response: the nature of the human brain is plastic. It is constantly moulding and adapting to environmental pressures until we stop demanding change. This is good news for us as we are soon able to create new neural pathways with consistent effort in our chosen direction. The ability to relax is like any habit and strengthens with repeated use.

* Increasing the flow of vitality through our muscles and joints:

[ ]Energy tends to have a sticky quality that can get snagged easily if the channels are not smooth and free-flowing
[ ]Our modern lives are one of the culprits for creating energy snags
[ ]Sitting in chairs all the time instead of sitting on the floor at least some of the time tightens us up
[ ]Change is a complex process and demands courage and some knowledge of where we are headed
[ ]Yoga helps us to let go into the momentum of the flow
[ ]As we flow more freely, our energy will become more dynamic
[ ]Allowing free-flowing energy promotes top conditions for health
[ ]No one is immune from the effects of moving their body in a way that resembles our ancestral movements
[ ]Yoga makes us more aware of our bodies
[ ]It’s easy to see why people become pleasantly addicted to the results and take it up with such fervour
[ ]Keeping it going as a practice can help us be more disciplined in other areas of our life
[ ]Practice demands controlled severity at times and yielding softness at others
[ ]Practical application of select styles of yoga is highly energizing and also promotes restful sleep
[ ]Eating moderately and enhanced will power around food ensures better success rates with dietary requirements
[ ]Our awareness increases tenfold and we learn to share respectfully what we have learned.

* Releasing tension and letting go of unhelpful states of mind: We can move swiftly through uncomfortable states of mind like depression and anger. The focus demanded by yoga will help us shift out of the thinking patterns responsible.

* Training our mind towards increased focus and discipline: When we learn the joy of repetition we know we have somewhere reliable to turn when things are tough, or a great channel for expression of our whole gamut of feelings and emotions. We can really learn to recognise the energies at play, and our awareness will soon pick up on what’s going on in other areas of our lives. It is training our focus and making us more available to ourselves.

In Summary…

Strong, disciplined people are products of strong disciplined minds. Fortunately for us the mind is forever responsive to training and the forming of new habits. If we view the mind as the search engine of the brain, just like it’s counterpart, the computer, we know we can always get updates, upgrades, change search engine providers and customize all the settings. This leaves our limitations in the hands of our creativity. The more creative we are, the further we can travel into transformation.
