Living Upwards

Are you turning your world upside down?

PTART.WORKS

Sometimes
in order to live upwards
we must fall downwards
like drips
running off the canvas
of time and space
we must allow
ourselves to run
unfettered
with gravity’s pull
and when we reach the edge
we must allow
ourselves to dry
resting
simply breathing
on the beach of emptiness
as we dream at the borders
of infinity
only to renew ourselves
once again
by turning the canvas
upside down.

When asked today in my Magic Mirror Challenge about the message I want to espouse, I am forced to think long and hard about it. There are so many pat answers I could give, but if I am living true to my word I want to go deeper than all the platitudes that have been already said.

If I could put this painting and it’s meaning into a message that would perhaps carry, and give new perspective it would be…

Go Through, Gatekeeper. Go Through!

I feel like I shouldn’t be this comfortable or confident;
I feel like my life is a wreck and I am doing everything wrong!
‘You are’ said the voice.
What do I do with That!? I ask myself (not wanting to fight).
Nothing.
You cannot fight it.

Right or wrong, I guess I want a phantom;
I want something I do not know.
I see things based on evidence and intuition.
So you could say that yes, I am day dreaming my future into being,
Where as others, are dreaming themselves into oblivion.

You ARE the gate keeper;
You can see things how ever you like,
But you only see the dreams of those who pass through your door.

It is time to dream your own dream.

If our ways are supposed to part, then it will be from your strong desire;
I have no desire to leave or destroy.
I seek only to build, repair and develop.
I seek only to know the future I have never experienced,
Not to repeat the pasts that I have.
I seek to make amends, to adapt and evolve.
I seek to expand upon what I have and keep for myself a stable base from which to spread my wings.

If you wish to be part of my world then visualize yourself there.
Do not leave your dreams in the grip of negative presuppositions.
You neither know the way, or can predict its results unless you dream the way yourself.

It is time to invest in your own dreams and stop merely holding the doors for others without passing through.
Don’t let life pass you by by grasping at it.
You must enter it.
You must leave all past behind and let it serve merely as a guide, not a beacon.
Your beacon should be your own dream
Not that of others.

Sometimes, things only strike you as obvious when you have been through a crisis and all your doors of perception are open.

How many times have we encountered ourselves and others as merely the gatekeepers to the dreams of others.

When are we going to finally own up to the individuality that sets us apart from everyone else on the planet and be courageous enough to embrace it fully.

I think I ask myself this every day.

I get stuck on the how’s but hey, I’m doing it, even though I haven’t a clue how.

The Regenerative Power of The Creative Self

Sometimes we need a concept about what we are doing to help us through when the going gets tough. Here are my thoughts on how our creative life is in fact very resilient. We need to learn trust, patience and to understand the nature of the thing.

Poet

I dream of standing
speaking my words
from soul song
into your eyes,
direct line
from mine;
channels open
beneath me
is my heart,
throbbing
lust into my words.

I dream of standing
alone in the void
uncluttered
at ease,
a million to one
chance of
survival
embodied,
emboldened
by you
and you
joined.

What am I doing?
here it is again
that 'run out' feeling
where am I?
escaping to
the inner countryside
where my cottage in the sun
waits patiently
for me
to flee
the city's gravity.

Its ok
I'm fine!
my feet firmly planted
this time,
this song
all mine.

I rival her
but with a twist
for rivalry
is not really my style at all
is there something I've missed?
It's more of a sharing
a collective bean-bag of thought
each thought is a tiny polystyrene bead
like quick silver
it weight something
is highly toxic (to most)
and endlessly alluring

only the experience
need apply
for the position
'poet'.

What Does Being in Balance Mean?

It might be easier to start with what it doesn’t mean…

  1. It doesn’t mean being ‘perfect’; either our generic idea of what perfect ‘is’ and ‘does’ or what our culture may laud as the present ‘perfection’.
  2. It is not about being a model, physically or otherwise.
  3. It does not mean unchanging or static, unresponsive, dogmatic, programmed or reactive.

So from this we can more easily see that it does mean…

  1. Being the best of what we, personally, are capable of being at any given moment with respect to our personal attributes, circumstances, conditions and predilections.
  2. Fulfilling our own criteria for ‘goodness’ and ‘decency’ that may not depend on any external source of approval or expectation.
  3. Constant and consistent adjustment to each new moment’s challenge, each event or situation.
  4. Being flexible and intelligent as we may have to compensate as we create new patterns moving forward.

Key words:

FLEXIBLE, DYNAMIC, INTEGRAL, NATURAL, ELASTIC, DANCING, RESPONSIVE, RECEPTIVE, FREE, SPONTANEOUS, CREATIVE, CYCLIC…

Perhaps this is why we so look up to the artists in our culture. They actively practice living and being these attributes. That is what being an artist is about. That’s not to say that artist’s are perfect (remember!) but they do demonstrate how to be, for maximum joy and fulfilment on planet earth. The artist spends her time mimicking and maintaining the rhythms of growth and renewal as set out for us by the natural world.

NATURE! There is our muse. Keep an eye on the seasons and get a feel for the cyclic patterns. This is our blueprint for balance.

PROJECT: One Hundred Paintings

Premise: to create a large series of work based upon the themes of…

  • Evolution
  • Mark Making
  • Meditation
  • Relationship
  • Relativity

Each painting will represent a ‘day’ in my life as an artist. The day is not twenty-four hours but is mine to define.

I will post each piece with a diary recording related notes that arise in the time period represented by the painting.

Each painting will contain the same elements plus one. This will be explanatory when the series is under-way and displayed chronologically.

PROJECT: One Hundred Paintings #1

Day One “Zen Yellow”

The ‘day’ is not twenty four hours. It is mine to define. Every painting a day. This is number one. The first painting and the first ‘day’…

I was so happy to receive my new set of canvasses. Nice deal for me with the last dribbles of savings.

I unwrap. I meditate and think about how, not what.

I mustn’t think about the ‘what’; that’s the magic bit and I don’t want to spoil the experience by over-planning, it’s just not my style.

I come downstairs into the studio. I take pictures off the wall. I tidy away the unnecessary items and de-clutter my space until I can focus my gaze on the marvelous whiteness of the blank canvas.

I do not suffer with fear of the blank canvas.

I honor the ‘mistake is a door‘ school of thought and therefore hold no fear for what is not my enemy but my ally…to be respected of course!

Instead, I revel in the exciting dance of probability and possibility as they vie for birthing in the quantum space before me.

Milestones are set by events such as these.

I feel I’m ‘graduating’ from my self-taught school of learning art within life and weaving them seamlessly into one blanket.

I’ve arrived

This is why this thing exists

This is why I strive

This is how I have traveled here

This is my signpost

I grab a large brush and mixed the black paint. So satisfying!

My mind reaches for a new small hog-hair with the intent to paint a doodle…

No!? Before I can interject the large chunky black acrylic soaked brush sweeps my arm around the canvas in an arc…whoa!

Now that’s how to break the ice!

Pop goes the virgin canvas bubble as the surface tension is slashed by the black line of nothing and everything.

The line tells me….courage, conviction, fearless expression, bold demarcation, space boundary, empty corral

…the yellow comes slinking onto the canvas soon after. The lemon perfect in it’s primary simplicity and bright lucidity.

I am awakened!

I look towards the horizon and see a magenta spot on it’s way…

That’s a story for another day!

Art & Healing Video: Brief Introduction by Phoebe

Hello! It’s time to meet you and give you an idea from whence I come, what I am about and what I want to cover in my Art & Healing video diaries. I can’t promise any regularity but there will be more videos along the way as I can find little windows; as you may know, I’m a busy mum recovering from ME/CFS…so hang with me a minute and see how I am healing my world.

“Healing is deeply needed in the world right now, and art is an extremely powerful way to make that happen; it’s very enjoyable, and anyone can do it!”

The Silent Killer; Get Down You Inner Censor….

The inner censor is the killer on the loose in our psyches.

How do we know it’s there?… Well we don’t to start with, but if you have tried to be consistently creative and failed to keep up stamina then it might be that, like me you suffer from a strict inner censor.

The censor is very much alive in the outer world at the moment. I won’t go into it because either you know what I’m talking about because you listen to the news and it’s not my focus here.

The inner censor is the real enemy and the outer manifestation is the proof that the energy is alive and kicking in our culture.

Why does the censor do what it does? Why does it kill the creative impulse?

Because it hates imperfection. Because it loathes chaos. Because it detests the uncontrollable.

Any time we have an idea that we just can’t do something about may be a symptom that the censor is in control. The gateway is very narrow if the censor is in command as it is a mean gatekeeper that only allows the acceptable through. It has a long list of what is acceptable, but an even longer one of that which isn’t.

In the creative life we need to channel the crap as well as the good stuff. This is for the creative zone where putting our thoughts on paper is a safety net for our fears. What we do with it afterwards is another matter but unless we can get it through the gates in the first place is a matter of re-education.

We need to gently take the censor to one side and give it a bribe.

If you let more through the gates, I promise, the quality and standard of my work will improve and increase in ways you never thought possible. Do me a favour mate and look the other way when I have a crappy idea. I can’t get to the good stuff hiding underneath unless you let this through.

The censor will probably consider this a feasible option. Just make sure you make it work for its living and don’t let it rule the roost.

You’re in charge!

Here are your Sanity Claus top tips for Silly Season

Are you planning on staying sane this Christmas? Me too.

Here’s how I intend to do it….

ONE: I will give myself permission to do any and all the following…

  1. Fail: failure IS an option and it’s not a sack-able offence. In fact it can lead to greater creativity if we are light about it. If we have any anger towards it that’s ok. Be with that anger too. Just channel it into something creative.
  2. Succeed: I can succeed at anything I want if I notice when I am doing it well….does that make sense? Success comes in all shapes and forms. Staying calm is success, especially at the moment! Just make a mental note of when you are doing it right.
  3. Try: Trying has such a bad rap but it might work out useful in the right situation. Try to stay calm instead of flying off the handle…just….try….! If you fail, well go back to step one.
  4. Experiment: Definitely worth doing, but you’ve got to watch for results and be on the ball….don’t lose your head over this one! Say to yourself, “What would happen if….”
  5. Practice: Practice the things you know you want to do but you don’t know how to do them well enough for your satisfaction. Practice it and things might just happen. Practice everything…including staying calm!

TWO: I will be devastatingly honest with myself…

Don’t leave anything unexamined, even if it’s completely cringe-worthy. Try to let it all BE without needing to act-out, (unless the acting out feels good that is; that’s therapy!) There’s a fine line between cathartic therapeutic process and destructive compulsive childish behaviour; but it’s a mile wide in practice. Imagine you’re an actor. It’s about masks. Just be conscious and KEEP CHECKING INTO SELF AWARENESS (which only lives in the NOW by the way) and in time you can let the mask drop, revealing your amazing authentic self!

More Later…

Simply do a little at a time….

That’s the level thirty-three and a half place of mastery…

SOAR!!!

Happy Flight

😉
